Job opportunities for 240 Detroit Public Schools students

More than 20 companies have signed up to provide job opportunities to 240 Detroit Public Schools students as part of a pilot program that kicked off Thursday.

Sixty students at each of four schools -- Frederick Douglass Academy for Young Men, Western International High School, Detroit International Academy for Women and Henry Ford High School -- are to get 11 weeks of job-readiness training during the school day and 10 high school credits. They will then be placed in a job, a paid or unpaid internship, or a community service position with one of the companies, said John Cromer, project manager.

The training will include instruction in so-called soft skills such as etiquette, interviewing and résumé writing as well as time management tips on how to balance school and work. More details
